MCW-Prevea Green Bay Family Medicine Residency Areas of Focus
At St. Vincent’s Hospital, residents work on an inpatient team with 2 interns, 2 seniors, a faculty attending (the same physicians who teach in clinic), a pharmacist, and 1–2 medical students. The team usually carries 15–20 patients with rolling admissions. The service includes protected time for teaching and structured sign-out.
FMTS Nights
After three months of daytime FMTS, residents join the hospital nocturnist to cover all inpatients at St. Vincent’s overnight. Responsibilities include admissions across specialties, responding to codes and rapid responses, and performing hospital procedures. This is often where residents gain confidence managing acute issues independently.
Family Medicine Clinic (FMC)
Residents spend dedicated clinic months with 8 half-days of continuity clinic each week. They follow their own patients and practice the day-to-day work of outpatient family medicine. In PGY-2 and PGY-3, residents also rotate through procedure clinic for office-based procedures.
Dermatology
Residents rotate with Prevea Plastic Surgery and NEW Dermatology, gaining experience diagnosing and managing common conditions. Training includes punch, shave, and excisional biopsies.
Surgery
Residents participate in outpatient pre- and post-operative care across general surgery, breast surgery, vascular surgery, urology, and trauma. Operating room time is optional but available for those who want to expand their experience.
Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN)
In PGY-1, residents complete an 8-week block, usually participating in 30–40 deliveries. This is the only rotation with 24-hour call, allowing residents to follow labor from admission through delivery. Residents work one-on-one with OB/GYN physicians and also see patients in outpatient clinic for prenatal care, pap smears, and GYN procedures. Additional rotations are available for those pursuing advanced obstetrics.
Sports Medicine
Residents train with Prevea Sports Medicine physicians, focusing on musculoskeletal assessments and joint injections. They also participate in sideline and locker room care for collegiate athletes.
Residents work directly with pediatric hospitalists and intensivists on the St. Vincent’s pediatric floor, caring for hospitalized children with close supervision.
Outpatient Psychiatry (OP Psych)
Residents see patients with Prevea adult and adolescent psychiatrists and may also observe psychotherapy sessions.
Geriatrics
Residents care for older adults in several local nursing homes, including rural sites. They also work with geriatricians and join hospice rounds, gaining experience in long-term care and end-of-life care.
Emergency Medicine
At St. Vincent’s Emergency Department, residents see patients of all acuity levels. They participate in trauma care, run codes, and perform common ED procedures.
Outpatient Pediatrics (OP Peds)
Residents spend two months in outpatient pediatrics with Prevea pediatricians and subspecialists such as pediatric rheumatology. They also round in the newborn nursery, caring for babies of family medicine patients.
Rural Medicine
Residents rotate in Oconto Falls, providing primary care in a rural clinic and covering the emergency department at St. Clare Hospital. This experience highlights the challenges and rewards of rural practice.
Community Medicine
At the Oneida Nation Indian Health Services Clinic, residents provide primary care and participate in community health work, including diabetes education, prenatal care, and substance use treatment and prevention.
Pain & Addiction Medicine
Residents rotate with pain specialists, spinal surgeons, and physical therapists to learn comprehensive approaches to chronic pain. They also train at Libertas treatment facilities in Green Bay and Marinette, gaining experience in substance use disorder treatment.
